The journal describes an 1863 trip from Illinois to Sacramento, though Purviance, his brother Marsh J., and Jonus Houghton were headed for Pike's Peak. They went by way of Des Moines, Council Bluffs, Omaha, the Platte and South Fork, Julesburg, Denver, Fort Hallock, Fort Bridger, Salt Lake City, Box Elder, Weber River, the Humboldt and Truckee, Virginia City, Carson City, the Big Trees, and Sacramento. He comments on Mormons, Indians, and the country.
